How might we improve early detection and management of alzheimer’s to lower cost of care by improving sleep and fitness? Most people living with Alzheimer’s are not aware of their diagnosis – or have not been diagnosed at all. In 2015, the direct costs for those with Alzheimer’s will total an estimated $226 billion, with half of the costs borne by Medicare. Less than half (45%) of seniors diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease are aware of the diagnosis. (Source: Alzheimer’s Association, March 2015) Interestingly "Sleep appears to be a missing piece in the Alzheimer's puzzle, and enhancing sleep may lessen the cognitive burden that Alzheimer's disease imparts.” (Medicine Net) |
